As I walked into the gym this morning I couldn't help but notice all of the fancy devices they have to convince people that getting in shape is some crazy science. Within 30 steps of walking up the stairs at Lifetime Fitness, they have every activity tracking wrist band known to man, behind that they have two types of metabolic testing areas, to the right of that they have a body fat testing machine, and just past all of that is their trainers station. Looking at all of this stuff, I can't help but realize how this could all be very overwhelming for someone knew to the world of health and fitness, not to mention expensive.

The War Within

Once I get to the point where I know I'm going to be in really great shape for a show, I find myself starting to look past the show. I start thinking about the changes I need to make, how I am going to go about making them, and overall just looking forward to the prep being over so I can start focusing all of my energy on making those changes. This year for some reason my mindset was in a different place...

We've all heard the saying failure to plan is planning to fail. As trite as that is, it is even more true when it comes to bodybuilding. When I sit down talking shop with young bodybuilders, one thing that almost always comes up during a conversation about the athletes contest prep is how they "grew into their show" and how they are so amazed by that. Nine times out of ten I can clarify the magic of their prep very simply by asking how detailed their nutrition and supplement plan was during their prep, how many meals they ate each week, and if they could tell me exactly what they ate three weeks out on a Tuesday.

Bodybuilding is a 24/7/365 sport if you are serious about your goals. With that in mind it never ceases to amaze me how so many wanna-be bodybuilders with visions of greatness think they are somehow going to magically continue to improve year in and year out when at best they are truly living as bodybuilders for 12 - 16 weeks out of the year. Now, I am sure there are a good percentage of you reading this that have already thought to yourself "That's not me! I am a bodybuilder every minute of every day!" I'd be willing to bet that the large majority of you will change your tune when I point out just a handful of areas that you slack on when you are not in the pre-contest phase of your season: diet, progress pics, and rest.
